Fall
2006 Seminars by Cindy Downes:
-
EDMOND,
OK: Saturday, October 7, 9 am - 3 pm, sponsored
by OKLAHOMA HOMESCHOOL MOMS INFORMATION NETWORK and
the Edmond Home Educators’ Support
Group. Held
at Waterloo Road Baptist Church, 3100 East Waterloo
Road, Edmond, OK. Schedule:
8:30
am - Doors open. Register for door prizes.
9:00 am - Time
Management, Scheduling and Recordkeeping. Many
homeschool parents quit because they become overwhelmed
with too many children on too many grade levels
and too much to do in too little time. In this
seminar, you'll learn how to (1) set priorities
and keep them, (2) squeeze five hours of school
into two, (3) write a log book entry, (4) document
academics, extracurricular activities, and life
learning in your log book, (5) create a portfolio,
and (6) figure GPAs for transcripts.
10:30 am - Teaching
Without Textbooks: The best curriculum
is not necessarily a textbook especially if your
child has difficulty with traditional schoolwork,
is advancing academically faster than "normal," or
has specific career goals. This seminar will
help you to think "out of the box" when
choosing (or using your current) curriculum.
You'll learn how to use alternative resources
to create your own multi-level, lesson plans
that will take advantage of your child's specific
interests, abilities, and learning styles. You
may even save money in the process!
12:00 - Lunch catered by Carrabba's Italian
Grill.
1:00 pm - Vocational
& Ministry Training for Teens: God created
each child for a specific purpose in his or her generation.
Many parents make the mistake of overlooking their
child's God-given gifts and strengths in order to
focus on “what every 5th (6th, etc.) grader
needs to know” or they assume that every child
is called to be a doctor, lawyer, or teacher. But,
the real question is: What is the Lord calling your
child to do? This workshop will encourage parents
to help their child find his specific calling, discover
what he lacks to pursue that calling, and then equip
him with what he needs to fulfill it. The information
presented here is very helpful to parents whose teens
are interested in alternatives to college.
2:30 pm - Open Forum
CHILDCARE NOT PROVIDED. NURSING BABIES ONLY.
You must preregister! No at-the-door registrations. Registration

Cindy
is available to do seminars at your event. She especially
enjoys teaching homeschool parents how to think "outside
the box" when creating an educational plan for
their children. Her goal is to encourage them to seek
God's purpose for each child, to discover each child's
individual gifts and callings, and to create lessons
plans that will help their children fulfill that calling.
She especially enjoy teaching parents whose children
are struggling with traditional curriculum or looking
for alternatives to college. Here are some recent seminars:
-

3: The Truth About Homeschooling. Homeschooling
has now become "the thing to do" and many
parents are jumping into it without much thought or
prayer. This seminar honestly explains some of the
pros and cons of homeschooling from the viewpoint of
a twenty-six year veteran homeschool mom who not only
homeschooled her own children from K-12 but also helped
hundreds of others to do the same. She will tell you
what it's really like to homeschool, what she learned
from her homeschooling experience, and what life is
like after homeschooling.

Seminar
4: Seven Things to Give Your Child Besides a Good Education:
Luke 2:52 says that "Jesus increased in wisdom
and stature, and in favor with God and man." As
Christian, homeschool parents, our goal should be to
give our children a well-rounded education by helping
them increase in these same four areas. Most of us,
however, focus on academics and neglect the rest. This
seminar will discuss seven ways to give your children
a "Luke 2:52" education.

Seminar
5: Time Management, Scheduling and Recordkeeping.
Many homeschool parents quit because they become overwhelmed
with too many children on too many grade levels and too
much to do in too little time. In this seminar, you'll
learn how to (1) set priorities and keep them, (2) squeeze

(4) document academics, extracurricular activities, and

and (6) figure GPAs for transcripts.

Seminar
6: Composition for the Delayed Learner. This
seminar will discuss problems many children have with
handwriting and composition in their early years and
what you can do to overcome them. You will not only learn
about resources available for teaching handwriting and
composition but you will also participate in some writing
exercises that will help your child write more effectively.
Bring a pen and paper for this one!

Seminar
7: Oklahoma History. Cindy will show you how
to make Oklahoma history something that the whole family
will enjoy using resources that are inexpensive, easy
to find, and easy to use. You’ll learn how to schedule
Oklahoma history into your school year, how to determine
what topics to cover, and what resources you can use to
make it interesting for all ages. This non-traditional
approach will give you the flexibility to decide when
and how long to spend on Oklahoma history, depending on
your family’s interests and needs.

Testimonials:
I
think your workshop was great! It gave me the confidence
I needed to know I could go ahead and get started. I
thought I was on the right track before, but your workshop
made me much more confidence that I could do it. You
told us great tips and websites to visit. I came home and
started downloading all types of assessments and materials.
Daylynn Green, Collingsville, OK
I
really enjoyed the seminar! The testings were the biggest
help for me. They helped me determine my teaching style
which will help me be the best teacher I can possibly be
for my children. It was like coming out of the forest to
finally see the individual trees. It gave me understanding and
clarity about the fact that we all have different learning
and communication (teaching) styles. It helped me to identify
my own and my childrens' learning style and learn about
curriculum that embraced each style. Thanks for the
seminar. I could easily use another one.
Bethany W., Tulsa, OK
I
attended your workshop yesterday at the AppleTree. It
was such a pleasure meeting you. The workshop was a
tremendous blessing for me. I will be a first-time homeschooling
mom. I so needed to hear all the information that you shared
with us. I had very little knowledge on curriculums, styles
of teaching, etc. My eyes were opened to so much information
that I needed for myself and for my daughter, and finding
what is best for the two of us. Thank you for putting
on the workshop, I know you blessed us all. Claudia
S., Tulsa, OK
I
have attended several of Cindy's workshops over the last 10
years. Each time I would come away renewed and encouraged
to continue on this wonderful journey of homeschooling. I
recall several times that I would find myself trying to figure
out what is missing, or how to change my teaching style or
technigues, but could not seem to get all the pieces together.
Then I would attend one of Cindy's seminars and she would
convey clear and precise ideas and direction that would clarify
things and help me bring all the loose pieces together. Kathy
R., Owasso, OK
