From
Kim Allison (Muskogee, OK):
After
home schooling for many years with unit studies, my 14
yr old son wanted to play football (his dad was all for
it, too!), so we enrolled him in the local high school.
They administered tests to determine his grade level.
He passed out of a Biology class without ever having “done” a
Biology textbook - just from our unit studies.
He also tested up a grade level in English without ever
even looking at a high school English book, and only half
of a 6th grade English book some years earlier. We just wrote
monthly essays about the current subject (with much input
and corrections from Mom - learning as we went).
He
believes he could have tested out of everything he was
enrolled in, but the counselor wouldn't let him for 2
reasons: 1. I had not listed the other classes on his “transcript” (since
I didn't really know if we had “completed” them
or not). 2. She said, “If you test out of all
your classes, everyone will want to do that.” Makes
sense to me!
He
recently scored 24 on his ACT as a 15 yr old sophomore,
even though I never administered traditional testing in
any subject. We capitalized on oral discussions and I
graded the kids on attitude! I think the main reason
for his success is that our unit studies were based on
Scripture memorization and meditation. (Psalm 1)
He
has decided to return to home school this year. He said
public school was too much wasted time. His summation of
public high school: “If you can endure the insanity
for 4 years, you get a diploma.”
